Description
This checklist documents the vascular plant diversity of the Important Plant Area (IPA) “Tauzholy” (IPA-KZ-AM), located in the south-western environs of Almaty on the northern macroslope of the Zailiyskiy Alatau Range (Northern Tien Shan, Kazakhstan). The site represents one of the few remaining fragments of low-mountain fruit forests and xeropetrophytic communities in the foothills of Almaty and supports a local population of the Kazakh endemic Atraphaxis muschketowii, as well as several endemic, subendemic, and nationally protected species (Prunus armeniaca, Tulipa ostrowskiana, Iris alberti, Euphorbia yaroslavii, Crocus alatavicus, Iris kolpakowskiana).
The dataset underpins conservation planning, IPA/KBA assessment, Red List evaluations, and biodiversity monitoring in peri-urban foothill landscapes. It integrates targeted field surveys (2023–2025) with citizen-science observations from iNaturalist (aggregated in GBIF), and published floristic sources.
Note on checklist reliability
The current species list for the Tauzholy IPA (2023–2025) has undergone critical taxonomic revision with respect to synonymy, nomenclature, and distribution. Records with uncertain identification or locality were excluded. The resulting checklist, published in GBIF, should be regarded as provisional. The authors emphasize that it will be updated and refined as new herbarium specimens and verified photographic observations become available.
Content: 114 vascular plant species confirmed (2023–2025), including a set of endemic, nationally rare, and socially valuable taxa.
Data Records
The data in this checklist resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 114 records.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Versions
The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Geographic Coverage
Geographic coverage ● Country: Kazakhstan ● Region: Almaty Region ● Code: IPA-KZ-AM ● Coordinates (centre): 43.15° N, 76.78° E ● Bounding altitudes: 1,045–1,472 m a.s.l. ● Area: 256 ha ● Overlap: partial overlap (30%) with Ile-Alatau National Park (eastern part of the site). The IPA occupies stepped surfaces of alluvial fans in the Aksai valley, with a mosaic of flat “bench” surfaces, steep slopes, and shallow gullies developed on proluvial gravel-boulder deposits covered by loess-deluvial loams. Vegetation includes mesophilous mountain shrublands and open fruit forests, petrophytic meadow-steppes on south-facing slopes, and more humid tall-herb and reed communities in talwegs. The site represents a low-mountain belt transition between steppe, shrub-forest, and mesic foothill habitats in the Northern Tien Shan.

Sampling Methods
Sampling combined classical floristic surveys and integration of digital biodiversity records. Field surveys were conducted across key habitat types (mountain shrublands, open fruit forests, petrophytic meadow-steppes, tall-herb and reed communities in talwegs) to document the occurrence of vascular plant species. Additional occurrence records were compiled from iNaturalist (research-grade and curator-verified observations), GBIF, and relevant literature. Taxonomic nomenclature was harmonized following POWO/WCVP/IPNI. Species records with uncertain identity or distribution within the site were excluded to ensure data quality.
| Study Extent | The study covers the Important Plant Area “Tauzholy” (IPA-KZ-AM) on the northern macroslope of the Zailiyskiy Alatau Range, Almaty Region, Kazakhstan (~256 ha, 1,045–1,472 m a.s.l.). Field investigations and data compilation were carried out during 2023–2025 and represent the most up-to-date assessment of the local flora. The geographic extent corresponds to the core habitats of Atraphaxis muschketowii and associated low-mountain shrub, forest, and petrophytic meadow-steppe communities in the peri-urban foothills south-west of Almaty. Temporal coverage spans three consecutive growing seasons (spring–autumn), with repeated site visits and integration of herbarium, citizen-science (iNaturalist, GBIF), and published floristic records. |

Method step description:
- Field surveys (2023–2025): Systematic floristic observations along altitudinal and habitat gradients; targeted searches for endemic, rare, and protected species; selective collection of vouchers for taxonomically critical taxa. Literature review: Cross-checking of collected material with historical specimens and authoritative sources (Flora of Kazakhstan, Illustrated Guide to the Plants of Kazakhstan, Red Data Book of Kazakhstan, Kubentayev et al. 2024, regional floristic studies for the Northern Tien Shan). Data integration: Import of verified citizen-science data (iNaturalist) and GBIF records filtered by the Tauzholy IPA boundary, followed by validation against known distribution ranges, habitat preferences, and synonymy. Taxonomic validation: Reconciliation of all records with POWO/WCVP/IPNI to standardise accepted names, synonymy, and authorship. Checklist compilation: Merging of all confirmed records into a Darwin Core Archive (taxon.txt core file with appropriate extensions), including basic taxonomic information and annotations on conservation significance where available. Quality control: Exclusion of doubtful species and out-of-range records; verification of endemic and nationally protected taxa; annotation of conservation categories (IUCN Red List, Red Data Book of Kazakhstan) for priority species. Final dataset preparation: Generation of the checklist, including 114 vascular plant species, with metadata structured for GBIF publication under a CC BY 4.0 licence.
